On a cold chilly evening or for a Sunday brunch, it's hard to beat the famous Joe's Shanghai soup dumplings. These are the best dumplings I've personally have had. Located in the heart of New York's Chinatown, it's a fast paced restaurant where you have to be prepared to sit next to strangers at a large round table. A bit awkward at first, but you'll get used to ignoring the other people at the table. I wouldn't say it's a great date place, but perhaps a multi-person date place where you, your date and another couple could have fun. Don't forget to order Shanghai noodles with mapo tofu - that'll complement the dumpling feast.
Afterwards, you can stop by a Chinatown cafe and sip green tea or the tasty bubble tea. Since you're downtown below Canal, head to one of the many clubs or lounges to chill or dance a bit. I enjoy dancing. No matter how bad you may think you are, it's all about having fun. Sitting on the lounge couch watching everyone dance just doesn't do it for the date.
